What is LOD in BIM?

A practical introduction to Level of Development and how model reliability evolves from early concept through construction and handover.

A practical introduction to Level of Development and how model reliability evolves from early concept through construction and handover.

LOD is about reliability, not visual detail alone

Level of Development defines how complete and dependable a BIM element is at a particular project stage. It covers both geometry and the non-graphical information associated with that element.

Why teams need a shared LOD definition

Clear LOD requirements reduce assumptions. Designers, contractors, estimators and owners can understand what information may be trusted and what still requires development.

From LOD 100 to LOD 500

Early levels support conceptual planning, while later levels provide progressively more precise geometry, coordination information, fabrication detail and as-built asset data. The right level depends on the intended use.

LOD supports coordination and contracts

Defining model expectations in a BIM Execution Plan helps teams align deliverables, responsibilities and review criteria. It also prevents unnecessary over-modeling.

Development should match purpose

More detail is not automatically better. A useful BIM model contains the information required for the next decision, at the right time and with a clearly understood level of reliability.
